International Mining History Congress
Venue and accommodation information
The Congress will take place in conference
rooms in the
Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth, Cornwall. Delegates that wish to stay
in the hotel – which is recommended – should book with the hotel direct.
Booking at the
conference rate,
which will provide all
meals and refreshments during the meeting, should ensure that no further
costs are incurred for the duration of the Congress. Those not
residential in the hotel at the conference rate will incur a minimum
charge of £25 per day for lunch and refreshments and the use of the
conference rooms.

The Penventon Park is a large good quality
hotel with over 60 rooms and suites of varying size and expense. It is
currently undergoing a major refurbishment which will retain much of its
Victorian character. The bar is good and the dining room very pleasant.
The town of Redruth is small and no longer the prosperous place it once
was. It has a range of basic shopping facilities, small restaurants (Chinese, Thai,
Indian) and some interesting pubs but it is possible to walk from one
side to the other in less than 30 minutes and is unlikely to provide
more than half a day's site seeing. It is, however, quintessentially
‘Cornish' in its vernacular architecture and stands at the centre of
extensive mining remains. It will seem very familiar to those who know
once important towns in now largely defunct mining districts.
Other
accommodation in Redruth, and within walking distance of the Penventon,
is limited. For those with their own cars, there are numerous hotels,
bed and breakfast outlets, and self-catering facilities in nearby
coastal resorts. Further information is available from the Cornwall
Tourist Board website at
http://www.visitcornwall.com.
People who are renting a car might
consider staying at the
Premier Inn at Hayle, a short travelling distance from Redruth.
