HEARTLANDS WINS BIG LOTTERY FUNDING!

Article Date: November 2007

It has recently been announced that the Heartlands’ project bid to the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks programme has been successful!

The Heartlands’ scheme to create a 21st century urban park and World Heritage interpretation centre for Pool has received £22 million from the Big Lottery Fund which will enable Kerrier District Council and the Heartlands’ project team to carry their exciting plans forward.

This grant will fund the sympathetic conservation of the internationally significant Robinson’s Shaft complex and enable the creation of a high quality visitor facility, a “Key Centre” for the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, inscribed by UNESCO in 2006.

Deborah Boden, World Heritage Site Co-ordinator says “The World Heritage Site Office is thrilled that all the hard work of the Heartlands team has paid off and their bid has been approved. We very much look forward to continuing to work with the team to ensure the Robinson’s Shaft site and surrounding cultural landscape is conserved and presented in a manner which truly reflects its significance to Pool, Cornish Mining heritage and the world in general”.

The Heartlands project is one of just three successful bids which are sharing around £70 million from the Living Landmarks’ programme. These three were selected from 313 initial applicants which underlines the scale of achievement which gaining this grant represents. The other lucky projects are: the Greater East Belfast Partnership’s Connswater Community Greenway, which has been awarded £23.5 million, and Falkirk Council’s The Helix that receives £25 million.
