SECOND PART OF WORLD HERITAGE SITE BID RECEIVES SUPPORT

Public consultation on the second part of Cornwall and West Devon’s mining landscape World Heritage Site Bid - the Management Plant – has shown great support for the document.

Over 200 copies of the Management Plant had been distributed to Parish, Town, District and County Councils, Mining Heritage attractions within the Bid areas, Libraries and Record Offices.  The document was also available on-line.

The Management Plan outlines how the internationally significant sites, within the 10 bid areas, will be managed.  It puts forward the case for the outstanding international importance of Cornish mining to UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - who will assess the Bid in 2005.

It has been revealed that, following the closure of the consultation on the second part of the Bid, 40 written submissions have been received by the Bid Team.  A number of individuals have also made verbal comments.

Deborah Boden, World Heritage Site Co-ordinator said, ‘A considerable number of respondents expressed support for the bid, particularly the two County Councils, District and Borough Councils as well as Parish and Town Councils, even where they went on to make critical comment on aspects of the bid or the Nomination Document itself. Only one respondent questioned the need for/ purpose of the bid.

Some responses cover multiple categories and run to several pages. Given the range and content of responses, the Project Team will consider them in detail and undertake alterations to the Management Plan where appropriate. Straightforward corrections/additions to the text are already underway’.

The Management Plan has been produced in discussion with Area Panels, a Technical Panel and the Bid Partnership.  In addition, consultation with individual subject specialists and interest groups has also helped to guide the content of the Plan.

Recommended amendments will be reported to a further Partnership meeting in late November for approval, prior to requesting formal endorsement from Local Authorities and submission to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
