Dedicated Website for Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Bid

Members of the public will be able to keep up with the very latest news on the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Bid, with the launch of an exciting new website which contains illustrations and fascinating information on Cornish mining, as well as detailed background on the bid.

The website, which can be found at www.cornish-mining.org.uk, will grow as work on the bid progresses, giving the public easy access to information and enabling them to watch the development of the project.

“The Cornish bid is unusual in that it is not based upon a single structure or place, but rather on a distinctive landscape and culture and their effects upon the people living in Cornwall and those Cornish people who took this culture and replicated the landscape overseas “explained Adam Sharpe.

“Detailed research is currently being carried out to identify sites which collectively demonstrate the international importance and impact of the Cornish Mining industry from the mid-18th to the end of the 19th century.

As well as mine sites, other sites and structures which relate to important changes which took place in the transport network, infrastructure, economy and settlement of Cornwall and West Devon can be shown to be intimately linked to developments within the mining industry and this is a major theme to the World Heritage Site Bid.

Bert Biscoe, the Executive Member for the Environment, said “The Web is the most exciting medium for global communication. “

“What better place to celebrate the most important industrial landscapes in the World; and what better place to lead the World in explaining and celebrating the value and quality of the story of industrialisation than Cornwall.”
