Second Part of World Heritage Site Bid Out For Consultation

The second part of Cornwall and West Devon’s mining landscape World Heritage Site Bid - the Management Plan - is ready for public consultation following the release of the Nomination Document in June.

The Management Plan states how the sites included in the ten World Heritage Site Bid areas will be managed.  After the public consultation, both the Management Plan and the Nomination Document, will then be sent to UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation - who will assess the Bid in 2005.

Deborah Boden, World Heritage Site Co-ordinator said, The Management Plan sets out our vision for how the World Heritage Site can make a positive contribution to the quality of life in Cornwall and West Devon. It identifies the policies to be applied in order to ensure our internationally important mining heritage is conserved, interpreted and presented to appropriate standards, so that both residents and visitors can enjoy our unique landscape.’

The Plan is being prepared by the World Heritage Site Bid Partnership, on behalf of the UK Government, to a format set by UNESCO. We are now at a stage where we feel it would benefit from wider consultation so the draft Plan is being made available to the public.  We welcome comment from anyone living in or visiting the counties or with an interest in the subject matter.’

Mrs. Helen Richards, Environment and Heritage Portfolio Holder said, ‘The Nomination Document set out the historic case for inscription as a World Heritage Site, outlining the contribution made by the hardrock mining industry to the development of the Industrial Revolution and our modern day society. The Management Plan explains how the globally significant mining landscape will be cared for, in recognition of this importance.’

Members of the public will be able to view the Management Plan in libraries, the Devon and Cornwall Record Offices, mining heritage attractions and on-line at www.cornish-mining.org.uk

Comments can be sent to:  World Heritage Site Team  (Management Plan), Kennall Building, Old County Hall, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3AY.  Alternatively, comments can be sent to: cau@cornwall.gov.uk

The closing date for receipt of comments is the 27th September 2004.  After the consultation period, relevant changes will be made and the document will be issued in its final form at the end of October.
