The ‘Discovery the Extraordinary’ Project team, based in Truro, has recently launched its new website, which tells the story behind the Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape, World Heritage Site (Cornish Mining WHS).

The website, built by Numiko, a Leeds-based digital agency, was recently reviewed by New Media Age, scoring a fantastic 92/100 for design, content and usability. Will Cooper, its editor said "The site is one the finest examples of web design and content I've seen in a while” and “Overall, it’s a fantastic, almost-flawless example of a site that takes what could be seen by many as a hard, heavy subject and makes it vibrant and, crucially, relevant”.

David Rutherford, principal officer for the Project said “We are naturally delighted with the results of this review and believe they are testament to the careful planning and research we undertook throughout the design & build process. The website is a fantastic portal for visitors wanting to find out more about the Cornish Mining WHS, offering educational and learning activities for families, such as audio trails, cycling & walking routes. We are proud of the finished product and delighted that it has been scored so highly by New Media Age”.

The Project, funded by a European Union and DEFRA grant through the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), has invested in eleven Cornish Mining WHS partner attractions, implementing substantial improvements to their visitor facilities and public presentation.

The next phase of the Project from now until 2013 will be aimed at target visitor audiences, public events at mining heritage attractions and a series of tourism familiarisation days, to introduce accommodation providers and other tourism businesses to the World Heritage landscape and attractions.
